As the clock struck midnight and we stepped into 2025, the world collectively took a deep breath. The New Year is a momentous time—a chance to reflect on the past, embrace renewal, and set our sights on what lies ahead. It’s a time to consider what truly matters in life: our faith, our relationships, and the opportunity to make the world a better place. Together, as God’s children, we are called to embrace the possibilities of peace, renewal, and unity, trusting in the Lord to guide us through this coming year.
In his letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” These words echo the spirit of the New Year. As we set resolutions and look forward, we should remember that true transformation begins with Christ. He provides us with the strength to overcome challenges, the compassion to serve others, and the courage to choose peace in a world that often chooses otherwise.
Looking Out for Each Other in 2025
The turning of the year invites us to think not only of ourselves but also of how we can serve and support others. This year, let us commit to looking out for one another, not just in words but in deeds. In a world marked by division, conflict, and hardship, we pray especially for peace. Our hearts turn particularly to the people of Ukraine, who have endured unimaginable trials in recent years. Their struggle reminds us of the fragility of peace and the power of collective prayer. In Psalm 34:14, we are instructed: “Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” These words challenge us to take an active role in fostering harmony, both in our personal relationships and on a global scale.
We must also remember the plight of refugees and displaced individuals around the world. These men, women, and children—our brothers and sisters in Christ—are searching for safety, dignity, and a place to call home. Many have been forced to leave everything behind in search of a future free from fear. As Christians, we are called to extend hospitality and compassion to those in need. Matthew 25:35 reminds us of Jesus’ words: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” This year, may we embody these teachings by offering help to the vulnerable and advocating for their right to live in peace and security.
Remembering Those We’ve Lost
As we look ahead to 2025, we also take a moment to reflect on those we lost in 2024. Their lives were gifts from God, and their passing leaves an irreplaceable void. Among those who left us were Liam Payne, Dame Maggie Smith, Dave Myers, Michael Mosley, Jimmy Carter, and Alexei Navalny. These individuals, from diverse walks of life, brought joy, inspiration, and kindness to the world in their own unique ways.
Liam Payne, known to many as a member of the globally beloved band One Direction, touched countless hearts with his music and charisma. His influence extended beyond entertainment, as he used his platform to advocate for mental health awareness and charitable causes. Dame Maggie Smith, a legendary actress whose career spanned decades, left an indelible mark on stage and screen. Her iconic performances, from “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” to “Downton Abbey,” brought light and depth to countless stories, inspiring generations of actors and audiences alike.
Dave Myers, one half of the beloved Hairy Bikers duo, not only delighted us with his culinary creativity but also embodied the joy of sharing good food and friendship. Michael Mosley, a doctor and broadcaster, educated and empowered millions to take control of their health with his ground breaking work on diet and wellbeing.
Jimmy Carter, former President of the United States, was a statesman and humanitarian whose dedication to peace, democracy, and human rights was a beacon of hope. Even after leaving office, his tireless efforts through the Carter Center to combat disease and promote peace exemplified a life of service. Lastly, Alexei Navalny, a courageous Russian opposition leader, became a symbol of resilience and sacrifice in the fight against authoritarianism, inspiring countless others to stand firm in the pursuit of justice.
We thank God for their lives and the legacies they leave behind. May they, and all others who have passed, rest eternally in God’s loving embrace. In John 14:27, Jesus offers us reassurance in times of grief: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” As we mourn, let us also celebrate the impact of their lives and strive to carry forward their values in our own journeys.
A Year of Change and Hope
The start of a new year always brings with it a sense of hope and possibility. 2025 can be a year of transformation, not just for ourselves but for the world around us. However, change does not happen by accident. It requires intention, effort, and faith. We are reminded in Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” With God as our guide, we can step boldly into the future, trusting in His plan for our lives.
This year, let us resolve to focus on what truly matters. Instead of fleeting goals or superficial achievements, let us prioritise faith, relationships, and service to others. Let us choose to be peacemakers in our families, communities, and nations. Matthew 5:9 reminds us: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” By living out this calling, we can help bring about a world that reflects God’s love and grace.
A Prayer for the Year Ahead
As we embrace this new year, let us lift our hearts to God in prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of a new year—a time for new beginnings. Guide us as we seek to live in Your will, spreading love, peace, and compassion in all we do. Comfort those who are grieving, protect those who are vulnerable, and bring peace to places of conflict. We ask for Your blessing on 2025, that it may be a year of renewal, hope, and togetherness in Your name. Amen.
Choosing Togetherness with God
As we navigate the challenges and opportunities of 2025, we must remember that we are never alone. God is with us in every moment, providing wisdom, strength, and comfort. In Isaiah 40:31, we are reminded of the promise for those who place their hope in the Lord: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” This assurance gives us the courage to face the year with confidence and faith.
Let us also lean on one another. The New Year is a time to strengthen our bonds with family, friends, and community. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, volunteering our time, or simply being present for someone in need, these acts of love and kindness reflect God’s presence in our lives.
Together, with God’s grace, 2025 can be a year of peace, a year of healing, and a year where love triumphs over hate. Let us walk forward in faith, knowing that through Christ, all things are possible.
Happy New Year, and may God’s blessings abound for you and your loved ones in 2025.
